John Howard Davies, the child actor who starred as the title waif in David Lean's 1948 production of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, died of cancer Monday at home in Blewbury, England. He was 72. In later films like Tom Brown's Schooldays, The Magic Box, and particularly 1949's heartbreaking The Rocking Horse Winner, Davies was a cherubic revelation. In later years he became a producer and director of the television comedies Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Mr Bean, and To the Manor Born, and from 1977 to 1982, he was head of the TV comedy department at the BBC.
