From Mickey Mouse To RuPaulTuesday, March 09, 2010 04:11 AM
There are lots of interesting things to say about singer- songwriter, Matt Morris. He is openly gay and married (pre-Prop 8). He was a Mouseketeer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club from 1991 to 1994 and would later grow up to write hit songs for fellow cast member Christina Aguilera, as well as Kelly Clarkson. Morris has also recently signed on to his friend and former Mouseketeer Justin Timberlake’s Tennman Records, which produced his recently released solo album, When Everything Breaks Open. And in a wide-ranging interview, The Advocate discovers that Matt also loves RuPaul’s Drag Race: Advocate: I imagine it must be liberating to write for big divas. I mean, don’t you ever wish you could belt out songs like “Miss Independent” in your concerts? Matt Morris: Hey, I’ve actually been thinking about that. I got a request to perform at a roller derby in Denver, and I thought “Miss Independent” would be the perfect song to sing at a roller derby concert. There’s something unique that a woman can do with powerful music that I’m not sure I can do. Do you ever watch RuPaul’s Drag Race? Of course. Are you loving it? Of course. It’s genius! Because that’s an amazing way for these men to sort of blur everything and blend feminine beauty with this aggressive male competitive behavior and rough attitude — all while wearing couture. I’m not a huge reality-show watcher, but that’s a brilliant one. (Photo: Drew Jarrett via The Advocate)
