Skating Around the CopyrightMonday, January 25, 2010 09:06 AM
You can't put a pop-looking image of, say, a Campbell's Soup can or Marilyn Monroe or even a peeled banana on your skateboard without first getting licenses from the likes of the Campbell Soup Company, Marilyn Monroe LLC, or the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which pretty much has a stranglehold on those iconic Andy Warhol images, even though Warhol himself once said that "Art is what you can get away with." The Warhol Foundation has allowed the Alien Workshop to get away with putting images from the artist's Death and Disaster series and his classic pop works onto a set of boards that come shipped in crates based on Warhol's box sculptures. “We are delighted to see Andy Warhol’s non-conformist spirit embraced by the talented and creative team at Alien Workshop," says the Foundation's director of licensing. "These pro decks are a testament to the profound influence Warhol continues to have on our culture.” (t/y Louis)
