Equality On The MoveTuesday, December 22, 2009 06:01 AM
Marriage equality has come to Mexico City! Mexico City lawmakers on Monday legalized same-sex marriage by a vote of 39 - 20. This will give gay couples in Mexico City increased marriage rights, including allowing them to adopt children, that were not conferred under the previous civil unions that had been city policy before the vote. Seven other countries allow gay marriages: Canada, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium. States in the US that allow gay citizens to marry include: Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and California (gay marriages in California are considered valid only if the couple was married before the Prop 8 vote). Mexico City lawmaker Victor Romo called it a historic day. "For centuries unjust laws banned marriage between blacks and whites or Indians and Europeans," he said. "Today all barriers have disappeared." (Photo by AGuyNamedWayne)
