Shark Gives Birth by Sea-SectionWednesday, November 11, 2009 08:59 AM
The jaws of life. In a curious first-ever event of its kind, a pregnant shark who was bitten by another shark in front of shocked visitors at an aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand, gave birth to a litter of pups through the gaping bite hole in her side. "It was like an impromptu C-section," said a woman at Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World who watched it happen. The babies were removed immediately from the tank so that stingrays and other sharks didn't eat the tasty morsels, and when aquarium staff began attending to the mother's bite, they found four more pups inside her. All eight babies survived and the octomom is stitched up and doing well. A wet nurse is on call. (via Daily Mail)
