They are extremely close-up, sharp-edged photographs of the surface of Mars taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera onboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) which has been circling the planet from 187 miles away for several years. The variety of terrain seen is incredible and the whole snapshots-from-Mars thing is kind of hard to believe when you can't get cellphone reception on a cloudy day on Earth.
