The Advocacy of SilenceThursday, November 05, 2009 06:00 AM
Several national gay rights leaders laid the blame for the bitter election setback in Maine squarely at President Obama’s feet. Gay rights groups had repeatedly ask President Obama, as well as the Attorney General, Eric Holder, to step up and speak out against the vicious anti-gay vote in Maine. Their refusal and near total silence on the issue was deafening. Noted activist, David Mixner, said it was “appalling” to see President Obama silently standing on the sidelines, as was the complete failure of our national LGBT organizations and leaders to demand his involvement. Not to mention, the outrageous act of the Democratic National Committee sending an email into Maine asking Maine Democrats to call into NEW JERSEY on Election Day instead of supporting the fight against bigotry in their own state, was truly “unbelievable.” It reminds me of a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
