This is not going to end well for the flies OR mankindFriday, October 16, 2009 03:24 PM
Scientists have created a laser that creates "false memories" in fly brains. According to New Scientist, "the flash of laser light can alter the brains of fruit flies so that they learn to fear pain they never actually felt." Creating these false memories causes pain aversion behavior modification. When the flies had been given the laser, they instinctively moved away from an electric shock. And scientists are quite sure that the human brain is similarly wired. Although for now the scientists are saying "It would be unethical to engineer transgenic humans and tell them what memories to have," this is always how the movie starts, isn't it?
