Fabulous old-skool gossipist Janet Charlton on her blog Janet Charlton's Hollywood has an interesting item on the surprising vagaries of fame, vis-a-vis Joan Collins and Elizabeth Taylor. It's like the fable of the tortoise and the hare. Sort of. Back in the day when Collins was starting out, she was often compared to Taylor, an already established Hollywood royal. Collins was called "the poor man's Elizabeth Taylor," which naturally annoyed her. But over the years, Liz married many times, ate, drank, drugged, rehabbed, and is now a frail 77-year-old in a wheelchair; while the less self-indulgent Joan is a leggy broad of 76 living it up with her 44-year-old husband. Looks like that proverbial poor man chose well.
