Fire Island InvasionFriday, January 16, 2009 03:58 PM
Every summer while most of America is honoring our nation’s independence on the 4th of July the local inhabitants of the two gay resort towns on Fire Island, NY celebrate the annual “Invasion of the Pines”. According to legend a drag queen from Cherry Grove in 1976 was denied service at a restaurant in the more upscale and slightly more conservative neighboring town of The Pines. The drag queens of Cherry Grove took this as a personal affront to their honor and vowed vengeance! A group of queens in full drag then chartered a small water taxi boat to carry them to The Pines where they were fully expecting to receive a rough reception. But the gay boys at The Pines harbor were immediately beguiled by this boatload of drag queens that had just floated in. And instead of fighting with them the boys of The Pines asked the queens of Cherry Grove to come ashore and have drinks! A tradition was born. Now every summer on the 4th of July hundreds of drag queens from Cherry Grove “invade” The Pines. The event became so popular that a large ferryboat is now used to carry the queens to The Pines where they are always met by a throng of cheering gay men.
