LypsinkaTuesday, January 13, 2009 04:55 PM
The actor, writer and pianist, John Epperson is best known for creating his much loved stage character Lypsinka. His demanding meticulously lip-synched performances to edited soundtracks of famous female performers have pushed the art of performance drag into new boundaries. Though Epperson had been doing drag shows in the early 80s at the Pyramid Club and Club 57 in NYC, it was not until 1988 that Lypsinka would make her official debut as a late-night addition to the bill of Charles Busch’s Vampire Lesbians of Sodom at the Provincetown Playhouse. She would also appear in the solo Off-Broadway shows As I Lay Lip-Synching and The Boxed Set. Lypsinka was also a frequent performer at Wigstock, the famed celebration of drag organized by Lady Bunny in New York City. Epperson continues to portray Lypsinka as well as acting in non-drag roles. He has also recently written a play entitled My Deah, Epperson’s version of Medea, set in Mississippi.
