The Queen of DiscoSunday, January 11, 2009 07:05 PM
Sylvester was a true original and a vocal powerhouse. He is credited as helping to create the Hi-NRG sound and his multiple hit songs like You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), Do You Wanna Funk, and Dance (Disco Heat), would earn him the title of the original “Queen of Disco”. Sylvester was proud to be the first drag queen to ever achieve a number one hit on the American Dance Chart. And later in his career after being pressured to butch up his image by his record label Sylvester would defiantly attend meetings in full drag. Sylvester also discovered and nurtured the talents of Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes who would become his faithful and ultra talented backup singers “The Two Tons of Fun”. Martha and Izora would go on to form their own solo group “The Weather Girls” and their song It’s Raining Men would also achieve iconic status within the gay community. Sylvester died from complications due to AIDS in Dec. of 1988 but his rich legacy lives on through his music and larger than life persona. This video clip of Sylvester and the Two Tons singing “Grateful” gives you but a small sample of how their vocal magic gave the children fever!
