Openly gay award winning singer/songwriter Melissa Etheridge recently met with the divisive conservative pastor Rick Warren who is embroiled in a heated controversy after being selected to speak at President Obama’s inauguration even though he has made past statements that compared gay marriage to incest and pedophilia. Etheridge has since written an open letter on the Huffington Post defending the pastor. Melissa says that Warren told her during their meeting that he regretted his choice of words on a video message to his congregation about proposition 8 and his talk of pedophiles and those who commit incest. We also learn that Warren is apparently a huge Etheridge fan and has all her albums. That was enough for Melissa and she is now convinced that Warren is a friend of the gays. She even autographed her Christmas album for him. And although it’s being reported that Warren has recently tried to scrub some anti-gay hate speech from his Saddleback Church website; he has yet to make a statement to his church or to the public that officially retract his bigotry against gays. One has to wonder if he ever will.
